Shamrocks Bid Farewell to Captain
Victoria – The Victoria Shamrocks announce that team captain Corey Small will not be returning to the club in 2018 as he has decided to move back to Ontario in order to be closer to his family.
“Victoria has been my home for the past 7 years and it’s with mixed emotions I say goodbye,” said Small. “The Victoria Shamrocks have given me the best years of my lacro
sse life and I will be forever grateful to this organization and the fans that support it. This is a tough decision, but one that I need to make to be closer to my immediate family at this time.”
In seven years with the Western Lacrosse Association club between 2011 and 2017, Small was a 4-time WLA first team all-star and a 2-time league scoring champion, both as recently as last season. He was a 4-time recipient of both the Shamrocks team MVP award and the team’s most popular player award as voted by the fans. He played a total of 190 regular season and playoff games, scoring 383 goals and adding 447 assists for 830 points, over 4 per game. The defining moment of his Shamrocks career came in 2015 when he helped lead them to the Mann Cup championship and was named the winner of the Mike Kelley award as the most valuable player in the Mann Cup series.
“It’s the end of an era for the Shamrocks,” said general manager Chris Welch. “In his time with us, Corey has built a truly remarkable record of accomplishments that is right up there with the all-time greats. I can safely say on behalf of everyone in our organization and our great Shamrocks fans everywhere that while we’ll miss watching him play in the green and white, we’re so very grateful for all of his outstanding contributions and we wish him and his family all the very best.”
A wise person once said that when one chapter ends, another one begins. With the 2018 WLA season fast approaching, the Shamrocks are looking forward to writing the next chapter. “We’re rebuilding on the fly,” said Welch. “On the heels of our very successful 2018 WLA Draft last week and with some other things we’ve been working on, we’ll be making several exciting announcements in the coming weeks.”
The Victoria Shamrocks’ 69th season begins at home on Friday May 25th vs. the Burnaby Lakers. Shamrocks season tickets start at just $49 for kids and be bundled with an adult for only $155. Tickets can be purchased at Victoriashamrocks.com, phoning 250-478-ROCK (7625) or at the team store at 967 Langford Parkway.
