Shamrocks Add Two Important Pieces for Mann Cup
VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria Shamrocks are pleased to announce the pickup of two new players for the Mann Cup, beginning on September 6th from the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve in Hagersville, Ontario.
The first pick up may come as no surprise to many WLA fans, as the Shamrocks have added 2024 scoring champion Will Malcolm to the team from the New Westminster Salmonbellies. Malcolm tore the WLA apart this summer, leading the league in; goals (52), assists (60) and points (112) for the offensive number triple crown. Will is also coming off an impressive NLL season with Panther City where he registered 35 goals and 96 points in just 18 games. He will be a welcome addition to the Shamrocks already potent offense.
The 'Rocks second pickup will also be from the Salmonbellies, as they have snagged Mike Messenger for their trip out to Ontario. Mike, who plays for the Saskatchewan Rush in the NLL, will be a big piece to include for the Victoria defense. Mike also stands in at six foot two, 220 pounds, making for a big and physical presence on the back end. He will also more than likely take over the Shamrocks faceoff duties, as he was an impressive 69.9% in the dot this summer.
"We're really excited to add two elite players in Will and Mike as we embark on what is undoubtedly the biggest challenge we've faced yet," said Chris Welch, General Manager and Governor of the Shamrocks. "We explored options with other players about the third spot but given all the various considerations, we felt this was the best way for us to go. We love our team and we can't wait to get going with this amazing opportunity in front of us."
This will be the first time in many years that a team has been allowed to pick up players for the Mann Cup. Earlier this year, Lacrosse Canada made the chance to allow only the Western representative to add up to three players. This was done to try and bring some competitive balance back to the competition.
The Shamrocks would like to thank the Salmonbellies organization for helping make these additions happen.
