The Western Lacrosse Association 2016 junior draft was held Wednesday night in Vancouver and the Victoria Shamrocks drafted 6 players; Northway, Cullen, Moffat, Klingsporn, Rybka, and Fair.

General Manager Chris Welch was pleased with the 2016 draft, “considering where we picked, we were very happy with our selections.  Taylor Northway is a prospect that is highly regarded and has the potential to be the steal of the draft.  We are excited to add local product Max Cullen to our team and he has shown in the past when we’ve called him up that he can play in the WLA.  We welcome all 6 players to the Shamrocks organization and excited about their development”.

Welch. “I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be an everyday player for us for years to come.” Garland says that his first two years on the Shamrocks have been a good learning experience. “For all of the teams that I played for growing up, I had a leadership role,” says Garland. “The last two years I’ve sort of been at the bottom of the barrel, which is alright. Everybody plays a certain role on the team. So I pursue to get better every practice and every game, and get to the same level as the rest of the guys who have been playing in the NLL for the last few years”. Garland says he plans on returning to the Shamrocks for the 2016 season. If all goes to plan, he should take a step up in his role on the team. “Ethan’s a great piece to our puzzle, he’s great in the locker room and is a real good kid,” says Wade. “I hope that he continually gets better, and we’ll see him as a core piece of our team.”

Garland’s success as an eighth round pick should offer a lesson for young players that are taken in the late rounds of this year’s draft. “Don’t give up,” says Welch. “If Ethan can go from being an 8th round pick out of Junior B in 2014, to being a Mann Cup champion the following year, it shows it can be done.” Garland echoes that attitude. “A draft pick is just a number,” says Garland. “It doesn’t matter when you get drafted. You just have to do your best and show that you can work hard, and that you belong at this level.”
