Hagedorn stellar in Rocks 5-4 win vs Salmonbellies
Written by Justis Doucet
New Westminster - The Victoria Shamrocks kept their perfect record intact with a 5-4 win on the road in New Westminster over the Salmonbellies behind a stellar performance from net minder Cody Hagedorn.
Tristan Rai opened the scoring with his first WLA goal just 1:24 into the game with the lone assist going to Cole Pickup. The home side then responded with a pair of goals from Mitch Jones, both of which came on the power-play. New Westminster took the first three penalties of the game and Victoria was unable to capitalize on the power-play, then the Salmonbellies scored on two of three first period man advantages. New Westminster also held a 17-14 shot advantage in the first twenty minutes, as Victoria jogged to the dressing room down 2-1.
Victoria opened the scoring in the second period as well, and it was another first. Sheldon Burns broke in alone and beat New Westminster goaltender Alexis Buque to tie the game with his first in the WLA. The rookie wasn't done there, as just a few minutes later found some room on the rush and beat Buque low to the far side for his second of the night. While it wasn't a power play goal, Victoria was able to capitalize a man up, Cole Pickup scored his second of the season on a delayed penalty against New Westminster to put Victoria up 4-2. Â Victoria extended the lead minutes later as Chris Wardle scored to make it 5-2 for the visitors.
New Westminster came out firing on all cylinders in the third period but they ran into a brick wall in Cody Hagedorn. The Salmonbellies scored twice in the third period to make it interesting, but the Rocks defense slammed the door in the final minutes to hold onto a 5-4 road win to move to 3-0 on the season. Hagedorn stopped forty-five of forty-nine shots in the win, while Victoria scored five times on thirty-nine shots.
