Shamrocks Secure Second

The Victoria Shamrocks put on an absolute show in the Bill Copeland Arena, a.k.a. The Swamp, against the Burnaby Lakers on Friday night. The Shamrocks overcame 5 separate deficits to take down Burnaby 11-9 in a thrilling evening of lacrosse. Victoria is now sitting in second place, two points behind league-leading New Westminster. For the Lakers, they have 11 points and are two points behind Nanaimo for the fourth and final playoff spot. 


The first period ended at a standstill with both teams tied at 3. The Shamrocks really came to life in the second period. Although the Lakers scored two goals in the first 2 minutes, the ‘Rocks scored 4 unanswered goals to finish the period ahead 7-5. Victoria also out-shot Burnaby 16-11 in the second period to give them momentum with 20 minutes to go. 


The third period saw the Lakers score the first 3 goals of the period to put Burnaby ahead 8-7. The Shamrocks kept forcing the pressure offensively and that’s when Josh Fagan seized the opportunity to tie the game. The Lakers would get one more goal but it wouldn’t matter as the Shamrocks scored the last 3 goals of the game to seal the deal and secure the win. 


Rob Hellyer was the first star of the night as he scored 3 goals and 5 assists. Hellyer has looked extremely comfortable since he joined the team earlier this year. Adam Shute was the netminder for the ‘Rocks and stopped 27 of the Lakers 36 shots on the evening. Jesse King and Casey Jackson put up 11 points combined as King was named 3rd star of the game. 


The ‘Rocks are in Langley on Wednesday and return home for a final regular season battle against the Maple Ridge Burrards next Friday. Friday’s game is Keep Smiling Night Presented by Westshore Dental Clinic so look out for any promotions or prizes at the game.
