Shamrocks Ride Hot Start to Key Win
The Victoria Shamrocks rode a blazing start and came away with 12-8 win over the Burnaby Lakers at the Q Centre on Sunday night.
After a tentative start by both clubs, the Shamrocks got on the board at 5:15 of the 1st when Chris Wardle rippled the twine. The goals came fast and furious from there and when the period came to a close the Shamrocks were in the driver seat with a commanding 9-1 edge.
In the 2nd period, Burnaby did their best to slow the pace to crawl and ended up outscoring the Shamrocks 5-2 in the stanza.
The Shamrocks vaunted defence rose the occasion in the 3rd period and secured the win for the Shamrocks.
Shots on the night favoured Victoria 52-46.
Chris Boushy picked up 4 goals on the night while Jesse King and Tyson Gibson each chipped in with a pair. Singles went to Marshal King, Larson Sundown, Derek Lloyd and Chris Wardle.
After a sensational effort in goal on Friday against Coquitlam, the Shamrocks went back to Pete Dubenski in goal and he picked up his 6th win of the season making 38 saves on the night.
League scoring leader Robert Church picked up 2 goals and 3 assists to add to his totals in a losing cause for the Lakers.
With the win, the Shamrock have officially clinched a birth in the WLA playoffs. There is still much to be determined as far as the final standings, however. The Shamrocks wrap up the regular season with road games in New Westminster on Thursday, and Coquitlam on Saturday.
