Friday August 12th @ 6pm, The Q Centre in Colwood
Shamrocks lead best of seven series 2-0
Written by: Lucas Wilson
The Victoria Shamrocks are off to a hot start in the playoffs. After the 9-6 win in game one at home on Tuesday night, the Shamrocks came through last night in Burnaby. Tied 8-8 heading into the third, the Shamrocks had another offensive explosion to pull ahead and take game two by a score of 13-8. The Shamrocks back-end and goalie Adam Shute completely stifled the Lakers' attack in the third period to secure the win. The Shamrocks' superstars have come as advertised. Rhys Duch has continued his remarkable 2016 season into the playoffs with eight goals and seven assists in two games. Cory Conway and Jesse King have been impressive as well, putting up nine and six points respectively. The goals haven't just come up front, however. The back-end has been huge for the Shamrocks, jumping up into the play, and contributing to the offense. The transition game is something that head coach Bob Heyes has credited as an important facet to the Shamrocks attack, and it should continue to be a factor throughout these playoffs. Game one featured a heated contest, which saw Corey Small, Jon Harnett suspended for the Shamrocks, and Scott Rouse suspended for the Lakers. Game two did not have that same aggressive element, so it should be interesting to see if game three picks up in intensity with both teams returning to a full lineup. Tonight, the Shamrock will look to take a 3-0 series lead. Knowing the implications of 3-0 lead, the Lakers will come into the Q Centre desperate for a win. The Shamrocks are in the drivers seat, and a win for them would be a huge step in returning to the Mann Cup.Â
Burnaby Lakers scouting report
The Lakers' highly touted defense and goaltending have had modest success holding Shamrocks high-octane offense to a minimum; however, in both games the Shamrocks have broke through in the third. Zak Boychuk started in goal in the first game; but after allowing three goals in the first five minutes, he was replaced by Tyler Richards, who has remained in net ever since. Up front, the Lakers have spread out their production, led by Jason Jones, Robert Church, Josh Byrne, and Eli McLaughlin.
