Shamrocks Fight for First
July 9, 2018
Sunday night was glorious for the Victoria Shamrocks who defeated the second place Maple Ridge Burrards in a tight 7-6 affair. The Shamrocks led for most of the night holding off all the Burrards could throw at them, including the kitchen sink. Special teams and shot differential were the keys to success for Victoria against Maple Ridge. The ‘Rocks went 3 for 6 on the power play paired with an impressive 6 penalties killed. The shots were 51-40 in favour of the Shamrocks who led the offensive charge from start to finish.
Shamrocks goalie Adam Shute was reliable on the back end all night. He earned 3rd-star honours after turning away 34 of 40 shots from Maple Ridge. Shute improves his record to 2-1 this season as starting goalie Cody Hagedorn got the night off to rest up after his 13-11 win over Langley Friday. Each goalie has seen quality action lately with Coach Bob Heyes making sure that neither guy is cold down the second half of the season going into the playoffs.
Tyson Gibson had another tremendous game for the Shamrocks on Sunday. Gibson scored 4 goals, including a power play and shorthanded goal, to secure the much-needed win. For Gibson’s 4th goal he outworked the Maple Ridge defender, received a hot pass from Rob Hellyer, and with his quick shot, the ball snuck past Burrards goalie Frank Scigliano. It was Gibson’s 5th multi-goal game of the season so far. The Shamrocks were able to shut down any scoring chances the Burrards might have had after that moment securing the all-important 2 points.
The Shamrocks next game is Friday, July 13th against the Burnaby Lakers in Burnaby. Then the ‘Rocks travel to Langley for a meeting with the Thunder on July 18th. July 20th will be Victoria’s next home game, this time hosting Maple Ridge in the final matchup of the season between the two teams. The night kicks off 5:00pm with burgers, beer, and live music at our tailgate. Game time for July 20th is 7:30 pm as the doors open at 6:30!
