Victoria Shamrocks 9 at Maple Ridge Burrards 10 recap
Shamrocks comeback stopped short with controversial non goal in 3rd period
Maple Ridge - The home side had a quick start like Friday when Victoria went up 3-0, as Maple Ridge scored the first four goals of the game. The Shamrocks were able to climb back within striking distance with Josh Fagan and Casey Jackson scored in the final two minutes to cut the deficit in half. The Burrards held a 4-2 lead after twenty minutes and an 18-13 shot advantage.
The home side restored their four-goal lead in the early part of the second period as Gillespie and Mallory scored within the first five minutes. Corey Small responded with his league-leading twenty-third and twenty-fourth goals of the season, starting a three goal run, as his two goals combined with a single tally from rookie Matt Hamilton. The run trimmed the Burrards lead to one, the 'Rocks scoring burst happening in just under two minutes. The teams alternated the next four goals, with Cornwall and Johnson each putting the Burrards up two, and Josh Fagan trimming it to one, twice. Casey Jackson was able to break the trend with his second of the night, tying the game at eight in the final minute of the second. Victoria outscored Maple Ridge 6-4 in the second period.
Corey Small's hat-trick marker broke the ice at the 8:31 mark of the third period and gave Victoria their first lead of the game, 9-8. Ben McIntosh found the equalizer for Maple Ridge at 11:10, then Riley Loewen gave the Burrards the lead with 5:54 remaining with his first of the game.
Victoria had a powerplay opportunity late in the game while down 10-9. Mike Triolo and Chris Wardle looked to combine for the tying goal with three and a half minutes left on a back-door pass. Burrards goaltender Mulligan made the stop but his stick looked to be in the net when he did so and the referee standing in the corner called 'no goal' waving his arms and play continued. Until this season the WLA had goal judges stationed directly behind both nets and would have had a better view of Triolo's shot crossing the goal line that would have tied the game.
Corey Small and Casey Jackson each tallied five-point nights. Small with three goals and Jackson with a trio of helpers. Cody Hagedorn stopped 34 of 44 in the loss. Three Burrards (Mallory, Ben McIntosh, and Johnson) had three-point nights to lead the team, and Brandon Mulligan recorded the win stopping 16 of 20 after coming into the game in relief for Burrards starter Frank Scigliano.
