Victoria – The Victoria Shamrocks are pleased to announce the addition of Mike Simpson to the coaching staff as an assistant coach in preparation for the 2017 season. Simpson began his coaching career in 2001 with the Jr. Shamrocks and in 2004 was the first Head Coach for the expansion Minnesota Swarm of the NLL. Simpson on being behind the bench with the Shamrocks, “I am really excited about being back in the Shamrocks family and looking forward to being a part of Bob's staff. Hazer and Artie were great teammates and have done an outstanding job coaching this team. I am grateful for the opportunity to join them and can't wait to get started.”
Simpson, a Victoria native who works in the community as a Lieutenant with the Saanich Fire department won a Mann Cup with the Shamrocks in 1997 and a Minto Cup in 1988 with Esquimalt Legion as captain for both teams. Shamrocks Head Coach Bob Heyes on the addition of Simpson, “it’s great to have Mike as a part of the coaching staff for the upcoming season. His experience as a player as well as a coach at the junior and NLL level will be a great addition to our team. Mike will be working with our talented offence as we compete for the WLA title and another berth to host a Mann Cup.”
The coaching positions became vacant in the offseason when Dave Lowdon stepped down and Terry Dennett left to become the Head Coach of the Junior Shamrocks.
