Rocks finish on a 5 game winning streak heading into playoffs
By Janice Huckin - There was no need to worry about tie-breakers as the Shamrocks left no doubt, claiming first place with an 11-8 overtime road victory against the Coquitlam Adanacs in their final regular season game Saturday.
Victoria held period leads of 2-1 and 6-3 before Coquitlam outscored the Shamrocks 4-1 in the final 20 minutes to tie the game at 7-7 and send the contest into overtime. In the extra period, the Rocks scored the first 4 goals, 3 of them in the first 2:36 before Jesse King’s fourth of the night at 6:42 pretty much put the game away. Coquitlam managed to find twine with one more with just 1.2 seconds left.
Rhys Duch finished the game with 2 goals and 6 assists (and the league points title at 101) while Jesse King chipped in 4 goals and 1 helper. They were named first and second stars respectively. Jeff Shattler also had a 4-goal night with Corey Small chipping in 4 assists and Josh Fagan had the other Victoria goal. Adam Shute, former Adanac, picked up the win in goal for the Rocks while former Shamrock Josh Phillips picked up third star honours at the other end of the floor making 48 saves in a losing cause. The Shamrocks were honoured to be part of the ceremony to honour Dr. Donald ‘DOC’ Hedges on Saturday night.
The playoffs are set to start with both series beginning on Tuesday August 9. The Burnaby Lakers will come into the Q Centre to face the Shamrocks. Start time is 7:45 pm at The Q centre. Let the second season begin.Â
