Last week, the Shamrocks gave their fans a great reason to be excited for the 2016 season. After celebrating the 2015 Mann Cup championship one final time, the Shamrocks proved that they are still the team to beat.  From the opening faceoff to the final buzzer, the Shamrocks dominated the Nanaimo Timbermen, and won by a score of 18-6. At the middle of it all was a historic, record-breaking performance by Cory Conway. By the end of first period Conway had earned the record for points in a single period with 11. Conway was just beginning to rewrite the record book. By the end of the second period Conway had 16 points, which tied Jim Douglas’ 75-year-old record for points in a single game. As the third was winding down, Conway cemented his place in history with an assist on a Rhys Duch goal.

Conway’s remarkable evening overshadowed plenty of other remarkable performances by his teammates. In his first game as captain of the team, Corey Small played a big part in Conway’s performance scoring seven goals with four assists. Duch also flirted with the record as well, finishing the game with 12 points. Thomas Moffat and Ian McShane impressed in their Shamrocks debuts, with both players scoring goals. Shamrocks goalie Cody Hagedorn looked sharp, making 36 saves on 42 shots.

It is worth noting that the Shamrocks were playing without four of their key players. Tyler Burton, Jesse King, and Greg and Jon Harnett were all with their respective NLL teams last week. They will all re-join the Shamrocks lineup tonight, and Shamrocks fans will get their first look at a fully loaded Shamrocks lineup.

Tonight will feature a rematch of last year’s WLA championship, as the Shamrocks take on the New Westminster Salmonbellies. The Shamrocks had no problem taking care of the Salmonbellies last year, sweeping them four games to none. New West will come out hungry, looking to avenge last year’s loss, and should provide a tough test. The Shamrocks will look to carry their momentum forward and move to 2-0 on the season.
