With postseason quickly approaching, it appears that the Victoria Shamrocks are rounding into form. The Shamrocks have won their last three games, and need just one win in their last two games to clinch the first seed in the WLA playoffs. It has been a long season, but the team has remained consistent throughout with a 12-4 record. The final home game of year will feature the same matchup as the first game of the year: the Nanaimo Timbermen. That game was simply historic. After the Shamrocks revealed their 2015 Mann Cup championship banner, Cory Conway put on a performance of a lifetime, tallying 18 points to break a 65-year-old record for points in a single game. That performance began a remarkable year of offensive output from the Shamrocks. With two games to play, the Shamrocks have already far outscored every other team in the WLA. Barring another record-breaking performance by Conway, Rhys Duch has secured the most points in the WLA, as he leads the league by a margin of 20. Corey Small has also had an impressive year, as he currently sits in fourth place. It also appears that Conway will finish the WLA season as the league leader in assists for the sixth time.
As impressive as those offensive accomplishments are, they mean nothing heading into the playoffs. With a win tonight, the Shamrocks would be guaranteed home-floor advantage throughout the WLA playoffs, which would give them the greatest chance at a shot at repeating as Mann Cup champions for the first time. Regardless of seeding, the first round of the playoffs has been confirmed.
If the Shamrocks secure the first seed, the first round opponent will be the Burnaby Lakers. If the Shamrocks cannot manage two points in the final two games, the Shamrocks will play the Maple Ridge Burrards.
Timbermen Scouting Report
Tonight, the T-Men will wrap up another disappointing season. With a 4-13 record, Nanaimo has secured sixth place in the WLA, far out of the postseason race. That does not mean that the T-Men have nothing to play for however. The Island rivalry always produces fun matchups, and the Timbermen will do all that they can from preventing the Shamrocks from securing the top spot in the WLA.
