Burnaby forces game 7 with close win on Friday evening

By Janice Huckin

The Shamrocks have had three chances to eliminate the Burnaby Lakers since taking a 3-0 series lead, but the Lakers have battled back to tie the series, winning Game Six by a score of 14-12 in Burnaby.

Victoria held leads of 5-3 and 11-10, but Burnaby scored four of the five third period goals to pull off the win.  Burnaby was three for four on the power play, while the Shamrocks were one for three.

Rhys Duch led Victoria’s attack with four goals and three helpers and was named the game’s second star. Cory Conway returned to the lineup and chipped in one goal and six assists.  Corey Small and Chris Wardle each had two goals and two assists with Jeff Shattler contributing 4 assists.

Burnaby spread their goals around; three players got hat tricks, and goaltender Zak Boychuk stopped 38 of 50 shots fired his way.  Josh Byrne had three goals and one assist, and Robert Church had three goals and four helpers. They were named first and third stars, respectively.

The series will come down to Game Seven at the Q Centre.  That game goes Sunday at 6pm.  Historically, the home team always has strong statistical edge in a game seven situation. Regardless of the circumstances, Game Seven always provides an unbelievable atmosphere, and that should hold true on Sunday night in Victoria.  Tickets can be purchased at the team office (967 Langford Parkway) starting at noon on Saturday, by calling 250-478-7625 or from victoriashamrocks.com.
