Coquitlam Adanacs 6 @ Victoria Shamrocks 14 recap

Hamilton, Pickup each score four in dominant win over Coquitlam

Written by Justis Doucet

Victoria - Friday night was sure to be a test for Victoria, coming off a hard-fought 5-4 win on the road the night before. The Shamrocks had less than twenty-four hours to prepare for Coquitlam, but when the game started, they were ready.

Victoria took no time to get things started as Corey Small opened the scoring on the games first shot, receiving a pass from Chris Wardle and rifling a shot home. Small's marker came at nineteen seconds, Victoria's fastest opening goal this season, taking down Tristan Rai's goal Thursday in New Westminster. Coquitlam tied the game at one, but the game was not square for long. Seventeen seconds after the Adanacs tied the game, rookie Matt Hamilton scored his first WLA goal on a cut to the net. Victoria was quick to extend the lead as Small scored his second of the game a couple minutes later. Victoria took advantage their power play of the evening just over halfway through the opening stanza as Mike Triolo wired a shot past Phillips to make it 4-1. Triolo scored his second straight and chased Coquitlam starter Josh Phillips with Victoria's fifth goal on twelve shots as Dan Lewis came on in relief. Coquitlam answered off the ensuing faceoff as Randy Jones trimmed the lead to three. Small then finished off the hat trick late in the first, his ninth of the season to take the league lead in goals. Victoria jogged to the dressing room up 6-2 after one, outshooting Coquitlam 20-11.

Like the first period, it didn't take long for the Shamrocks to strike. Cody Nass beat Lewis thirty seconds into the 2nd. Then Cole Pickup scored 1:12 later to make it 8-2. Vinny Ricci trimmed into the lead for Coquitlam on the powerplay to make it 8-3 Shamrocks. Matt Hamilton and Cole Pickup replied for Victoria to increase the lead to 10-3 after two periods.

It took just under five minutes for the home side to find the back of the net in the third, but Cole Pickup tickled the twine once at 4:32 and again at 8:29 to put Victoria up 12-3. The teams traded goals in the final half of the third and Victoria walked away with a 14-6 win.

There were four hat tricks and two players scored four goals. For Victoria, both Matt Hamilton and Cole Pickup scored four, while Corey Small scored three. Coquitlam's Dean Fairall scored three in the loss.

Cody Cook came on in relief not once but twice in the game, his first WLA action although he has played backup all four games. First Cody Hagedorn took a shot off the mask and Cook came on while Hagedorn had his helmet worked on, then returned with just under nine minutes to go with the game out of reach.
